🐦 This Half Term’s Topic: Feathers and Flight

This half term, our learning takes off with our new topic Feathers and Flight. We’ll explore the history of flight, discover famous inventors and flying machines, and investigate how birds and other living things survive in their habitats. Children will compare different types of flight, ask big questions, and develop their curiosity about the world around them.

📚 What We’re Learning

✍️ English

We will be exploring the story Lizzie and the Birds, learning new grammar terminology and using it in our writing. This includes:

  • Commas for lists

  • Apostrophes for possession

  • Adding suffixes to root words

  • Using subordinating conjunctions

We will continue to work hard on spelling key words and forming letters correctly. ⭐ Please continue to practise weekly spellings at home — this makes a huge difference to progress in Year 2.

📖 Reading

Reading remains central to everything we do. Children should read every night, talk about what they’ve read, and have their Reading Log signed. Where possible, please encourage your child to access Oxford Owl for additional reading practice.

➕ Maths

This half term we are learning about:

  • Subtracting two‑digit numbers

  • Multiplication tables: 2×, 5×, 10×

  • Division facts for 2×, 5×, 10×

  • Multiplication and division problems

  • Addition facts to 20

  • Money

🕰️ History

We will explore the history of flight, including inventors and inventions linked to flying machines. Our enquiry question is: Who made the most significant contribution to modern aviation?

🔬 Science

Our science topic is Living Things and Their Habitats. Children will learn about:

  • Different habitats

  • How animals survive in their environments

  • Simple food chains

🧠 PSHE

Our Jigsaw theme is Dreams and Goals, helping children think about aspirations and how to work towards them.

🏃 PE

PE continues every Wednesday and Friday with our coach from SM Sports. Children must wear their full PE kit, including trainers or pumps. Earrings must be removed or covered with plasters.

✝️ RE

Our enquiry question this half term is: Why are festivals important in a community? We will explore festivals celebrated in Christian, Muslim, Sikh and Jewish faiths.
