πββοΈ PE Day: Tuesday (Swimming) & Thursday
Children must wear their school-approved PE kit. Earrings must be removed or covered with plastersβstaff cannot remove them. -
π Reading Books:
Library books can be borrowed for two weeks. Class reading books should be taken home and returned daily. Reading Logs can be written in by children or adults. -
βοΈ Spellings:
Weekly spelling lists are provided and uploaded to Spelling Shed. These include words for the weekly spelling test and statutory Year 5/6 words. -
π» Homework:
Online English and Maths activities are set weekly to reinforce classroom learning.
π What Weβre Learning
π English
This half term we will be focusing on both fiction and nonβfiction writing:
β¨ Fiction: Suspense, Action & Dialogue
Children will explore how to:
- Build suspense
- Use action to move the story forward
- Write effective dialogue using correct punctuation
π Nonβfiction: Persuasion & Instructions
We will look at:
- Persuasive writing techniques
- Instructional writing
- Using the pattern of 3 for persuasion (e.g., Visit, Swim, Enjoy!)
βοΈ Grammar Focus
Children will work on:
- Adverbial phrases
- Connectives and conjunctions
- Applying grammar skills across all writing
π Spellings
- Weekly spellings are set every Friday on Spelling Shed
- Paper copies are available if preferred
- Regular practice is strongly encouraged at home to support progress
π Reading
We will be reading a range of fiction, nonβfiction and poetry, including:
- The Stolen Spear
- Wolf Brother
- Wolf Road
- Stig of the Dump
Reading regularly at home makes a huge difference to learning.
Please support your child by listening to them read and discussing new vocabulary or ideas.

This half term, Year 5 will be learning about:

- Converting between fractions, decimals and percentages

- Reading and interpreting line graphs
- Working with tables

This half term in Music, children will be exploring tempo β understanding how changes in speed can completely alter the mood of a piece. They will:
- Listen to different tempos and discuss how they affect the feel of music π§
- Experiment with increasing and decreasing tempo when performing
- Compose their own short piece of music using tempo changes to build excitement or tension πΌ
- Perform their work to the class and evaluate how successfully they used tempo
π» Computing
In Computing, Year 5 will be learning Microbit programming β a fun, handsβon way to develop coding skills. Children will:
- Learn what a Micro:bit is and how it works π
- Write simple programs using blockβbased coding
- Create outputs such as messages, symbols or flashing patterns on the Micro:bit LED display π‘
- Experiment with inputs (buttons, shaking, tilting) to make interactive programs
- Build confidence in debugging and refining their code
βοΈ R.E. β Christianity: Salvation
This unit focuses on the Christian belief in Salvation. Children will:
- Explore why Christians believe Jesusβ death and resurrection are central to their faith βοΈ
- Learn how Easter links to themes of forgiveness, hope and new beginnings
- Look at how different Christian groups express these beliefs (worship, celebrations, rituals)
- Reflect on why the Easter story is important to Christians today
πͺHistory β Stone Age to Iron Age
In History, the children will journey through Prehistoric Britain, exploring how life changed over thousands of years. They will learn about:
- Differences between the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age
- How tools, weapons and materials changed over time πͺπ¨
- Prehistoric homes, settlements and early farming
- Daily life: hunting, gathering, cooking and clothing
- How archaeological evidence helps us understand the distant past πΊ
- How technological developments (metalworking) transformed society
π§ Science & Design Technology β Forces, Mechanisms and Pulleys
In Science and DT, children will investigate forces and apply them to real mechanisms. They will:
- Explore how forces act on objects (pushes, pulls, friction, gravity) π
- Investigate how mechanisms like pulleys, levers and gears help us lift or move loads
- Design and build simple mechanisms that use pulleys to make a task easier
- Test and evaluate their designs, making improvements where needed
- Develop scientific enquiry by predicting, observing and explaining their results
β€οΈ PSHE β Healthy Me
This half termβs PSHE unit focuses on Healthy Me. Children will learn to:
- Understand how lifestyle choices affect physical and mental health
- Recognise the importance of exercise, nutrition and sleep π§ββοΈπ
- Discuss managing feelings, stress and friendships
- Explore ways to keep themselves safe in different situations
πΌFrench β Chez Moi
In French, the focus is βChez Moiβ (My Home). Children will practise:
- Vocabulary linked to rooms and features of a house π‘
- Describing where things are
- Building simple sentences about their home life
- Listening and speaking activities to develop pronunciation and confidence

- Help your child establish a regular homework routine
- Practise weekly spellings, including statutory Year 5/6 words
- Read with or listen to your child read dailyβjust 10 minutes makes a big difference
- Talk about what theyβve learned in class
