🛡️ This Half Term’s Topic: Ancient Civilisations

This half term our topic is “Ancient Civilisation” 🌍🏺 — an exciting journey through some of the earliest and most influential societies in history.

Here is an overview of what we will be learning across the curriculum.

📌 Key Information

  • 🏃‍♀️ PE Days: Monday and Tuesday
    Children must wear their full PE kit to school. Earrings should be removed or covered with plasters.

  • 📖 Reading Books: Sent home daily
    Children should read every night and return their book each day. Please sign their Reading Log at least once a week.

  • ✏️ Spelling Practice: New spellings are set every Friday on Spelling Shed
    Weekly practice is essential—please support your child at home.


📚 What We’re Learning

📖 English

This half term, our English learning is linked to our Ancient Civilisation topic. We will:

  • Read “Lao Lao of Dragon Mountain” 🐉⛰️ to support our History work
  • Write our own narrative inspired by the Chinese Dynasty
  • Use direct speech with accurate punctuation
  • Write sentences that show action, dilemma and resolution
  • Strengthen descriptive writing using expanded noun phrases ✍️
  • Consolidate grammar skills in all writing tasks
  • Practise spellings from KS1, Year 3 and new Year 4 lists
  • New spellings are set on Spelling Shed every Friday. Regular practice at home is essential for Year 4 progress.

📚 Reading

Reading continues to be a key part of Year 4. This half term we will:

  • Read daily in class to build fluency and confidence
  • Develop key skills such as inference, retrieval, prediction and vocabulary understanding
  • Discuss characters, themes and the author’s choices
  • Encourage reading at home every night
  • Ask children to talk about what they have read to check understanding
  • Use Reading Logs to track reading progress and celebrate effort

🔢 Mathematics

This half term in Maths, Year 4 will be learning about a range of fraction-based skills. Children will work on:

🍕 Fractions
  • Partitioning mixed number fractions
  • Using number lines with mixed numbers
  • Comparing and ordering mixed numbers
  • Converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and back
  • Finding equivalent fractions on a number line
  • Understanding fraction families
  • Adding two or more fractions
  • Adding fractions and mixed numbers
  • Subtracting two fractions
  • Subtracting from whole amounts
  • Subtracting from mixed numbers

These lessons will help build a strong understanding of fractions before moving on to more complex calculations later in the year.


🏺 History – Ancient Civilisations

Our History focus is Ancient Civilisation, where children will explore the earliest known societies and answer the enquiry question:
“Where and when did the earliest civilisations begin?” 🏛️🌍
They will learn:

  • What “ancient civilisation” means and why settled communities were so important
  • The six major early civilisations:
    • Ancient Egypt
    • Mesopotamia
    • Indus Valley
    • Shang Dynasty
    • The Inca Empire
    • The Maya Civilisation
  • When and where these civilisations existed
  • Why early communities settled near rivers and fertile land
  • How archaeologists discover information about ancient societies
  • Achievements of each civilisation (writing systems, architecture, farming, trade)
  • Theories about why civilisations declined
  • Their lasting legacies and impact on the modern world

🔬 Science – Animals Including Humans

In Science, children will learn about:

  • The organs of the digestive system and their purposes
  • The functions of different types of teeth
  • How food chains work
  • How to label diagrams accurately and carry out simple scientific enquiries

🤸PE

PE takes place every Monday and Tuesday. Children must wear their PE kit to school on these days, including:

  • Leggings/joggers

  • T‑shirt

  • Jumper

  • Pumps or trainers

Earrings must be removed before school or covered with plasters. Staff cannot remove earrings for children.


🏡 How You Can Help at Home

  • Read with your child daily and sign their Reading Log

  • Practise weekly spellings using Spelling Shed

  • Talk about what they’ve learned in class

  • Use books and websites to explore mountain environments

  • Support times tables practice: 3×, 6×, 7×, 9×, 11×, 12×

  • Try Hit the Button and Times Tables Rock Stars
